The American Civil Liberties Union has a new initiative to gather citizens to fight unconstitutional legislation passed by the Trump Administration.
After the past presidential election, so many citizens were outraged, concerned, and ready to fight the Trump agenda. One problem? There were (and still are) so many rallies, protests, and organizations to join that it is almost overwhelming. Well, at least that's what I thought. My planner was filled with different protests and political talks that I found myself either not able to focus in school because I was out learning how to fight injustice or, even worse, I found myself not able to attend the events at all. How am I supposed to fight the Trump administration and their unconstitutional initiatives if I can't even attend an event? I am pretty sure I am not the only one feeling this way. As a way to help fight the Trump administration and organize citizens to one platform, the ACLU created PeoplePower.org.
People Power is a grassroots member-mobilization project that engages volunteers across the United States to take action when the Trump administration attempts to create laws and policies that are unconstitutional. Using digital tools, you can easily search for People Power action events near you or sign up to host an event. These events include letter writing parties, organizing protests, or attending a city council meeting to speak on behalf of the People Power initiative.
Part of the People Power platform is the Freedom Cities Action Guide. This action guide was initiated when President Trump introduced his first and second unconstitutional Muslim ban--which were both struck down in court by the ACLU. Within this action guide, U.S. citizens are called upon to help implement and influence policy among local elected officials as well as initiate meetings with local police departments. Trump has wrongfully pressured local police departments and ICE officials to unlawfully search for and deport undocumented immigrants. This guide serves as a tool for citizens to meet with local officials and local police to ensure, in writing, they will lawfully follow and adopt the 9 "model" state polices. The Freedom Cities action guide is huge, ambitious, and definitely needs the help of U.S. citizens. Without our help, more and more families will be ripped apart because of the never-ending road to gain citizenship.
The ACLU is doing everything in their power to resist and fight the unconstitutional initiatives that threaten our country and our existence, but they can't do it alone. People Power isn't just to help us organize our powers as citizens, it is also to help the ACLU. If we all unite and work together, we can be successful in this fight for equality and work our way back to the progress made during Obama's presidency. After all, let's not forget his belief in our ability to enact change. This fight for change and equality won't not be easy. It is our country's hope, however, that it will be worth it.
